Dates and times of various astronomical events
Please note that all times are approximate local Coonabarabran times (unless otherwise stated) which take into account daylight savings. This means that if your planetarium software indicates a variation in time from those listed below you must make your own decision as to which time you can trust. It is just like you always know the time when you have one watch, but are never quite sure of the time if you have more than one watch. The software used to predict the following events and the times of their occurrence was Starry Night Pro.

Comet C/2006 P1 (information from Robert McNaught on 9 January 2007)
Comet C/2006 P1 has brightened considerably recently and looks like it will become the brightest comet for over 40 years. It will first become visible in these latitudes next weekend (14th) and could then rival or outshine Venus. However it is very close to the sun, so will not be visible for long after sunset. Details can be found at "http://msowww.anu.edu.au/~rmn/C2006P1.htm". The comet is already at mag -1 and is easily visible to the naked eye to observers in northern latitudes.
